1
Pour 1/4 cup of warm water into a bowl and add the yeast, mixing well.
2
In another bowl, combine 2.5 cups of flour with salt and olive oil.
3
Add the yeast mixture to the flour and begin mixing. Gradually add the remaining 3/4 cup of warm water while mixing and kneading until a dough forms. Ensure that salt, oil, and yeast are evenly distributed throughout.
4
Divide the dough in half and place each portion into two baking dishes. Dust the bottom of each dish with flour, place the dough, and dust the tops with flour.
5
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and then place a towel over it. Let it rise at room temperature for 1 hour.
6
After 1 hour, remove the dough. Dust your hands with flour, gently knead and shape each dough portion, then transfer to a work surface.
7
Allow the shaped dough to rise for another 30 minutes until doubled in size.
8
Use a knife to make shallow diagonal cuts across the top of the dough, creating a nice pattern that allows it to expand better while baking.
9
Beat the egg and prepare it for brushing on top of the bread to create a golden color.
10
Dust the bottom of a baking surface with semolina, then carefully transfer the dough onto it. Brush the entire top of the bread with egg wash to ensure even browning.
11
Place the bread in an oven preheated to 410°F and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. Avoid opening the oven during baking to maintain heat.
12
After about 15 minutes, you can briefly open the oven to check the browning progress. Once fully baked, remove the bread and let it cool.
13
Once the bread has cooled slightly, slice it open and enjoy with a drizzle of olive oil. You'll hear the satisfying crackle of the crispy crust revealing the soft, fluffy interior.
