Preheat oven to 350°F. Fill a large pot with water, bring to a boil over medium-high heat, and add about 1 tablespoon of salt.

While waiting for the water to boil, chop an onion into even pieces, peel and mince 4 garlic cloves, and chop 2 tablespoons of fresh basil.

Heat about 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and pressed garlic, stirring constantly for about 5 minutes until softened but not browned.

When the water reaches a boil, add 16 ounces of rigatoni pasta and cook until al dente so it maintains texture during baking.

Once the onion is softened, add 1 pound of ground beef and 1 pound of ground pork sausage to the pan, stirring constantly until the meat is fully browned.

Once the meat is browned, add 24 ounces of marinara sauce, 1.5 tablespoons of Italian seasoning, and the chopped basil. Stir until well combined.

Taste the sauce and season with salt and black pepper as needed, depending on the sausage and marinara used. Simmer for 5 minutes.

When the pasta reaches al dente, carefully drain it (avoid steam burns). Add the drained pasta to the sauce and stir thoroughly to combine.

Prepare 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. If desired, butter, grease, or spray a 9x13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.

Add half of the pasta and sauce mixture to the baking dish and spread into an even layer.

Top with half of the shredded mozzarella (about 1.5 cups) and half of the Parmesan (about 0.5 cup).

Add the remaining pasta and sauce mixture, smooth into an even layer, and top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

Place the baking dish on a baking sheet to catch any drips. Bake in the preheated 350°F oven for 40 minutes until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 15 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
