A classic Arab spiced meatball stew with tomato sauce. Fragrant ground beef meatballs are seared until golden, then simmered in a rich tomato and onion sauce seasoned with cinnamon, seven spice, and warm aromatics. Traditionally served with rice and vermicelli.

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, parsley, minced garlic with salt, dried mint, cinnamon, seven spice, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Add the ground white bread and milk to the meat mixture and mix again until fully combined. The bread and milk are essential to keep the meatballs tender and moist.

Using a small ice cream scoop, portion the meat mixture into balls and place on a parchment-lined tray. This recipe yields about 30 meatballs of medium size.

Heat olive oil and ghee in a large pan over medium-high heat. Arrange all the meatballs in the pan and cook until lightly golden on the first side, about 2 to 3 minutes, then flip and cook the other side until golden. Transfer the meatballs to a plate.

Strain the oil and ghee from the pan into another pot, reserving the flavorful cooking fat. Add the sliced onions to this fat and sauté over medium-high heat until golden brown, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the minced garlic with salt to the sautéed onions and stir constantly for about 1 minute until fragrant. The garlic will develop a cooked, mellow flavor.

Add the peeled, sliced tomatoes to the pan and mix well. Sprinkle with salt and stir constantly. Cover the pan and allow the tomatoes to cook for about 10 minutes on medium heat until they release their liquid.

Dissolve the tomato paste in the hot water and pour this mixture into the pan with the cooked tomatoes and onions. Stir well and bring to a boil.

Once the tomato sauce comes to a full boil, reduce the heat to low and add the cooked meatballs to the pot. Season the sauce with black pepper, seven spice, cinnamon, and check the salt level, adding more if needed.

Cover the pot and simmer the meatballs in the sauce over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing all the flavors to blend together and the meatballs to cook through.

Serve the Dawood Basha over or alongside rice, optionally with vermicelli stirred in. The aromatic spiced meatball stew is now ready to be enjoyed.
