Slice the cucumber thinly for better texture, or alternatively smash it with the back of a knife.

This is just a light marinade, not a heavy overnight one — simply sprinkle a bit of salt on the cucumber to draw out a little moisture and improve the texture.

Take the fermented tofu (spicy or mild as preferred) and lightly mash it — this is the same paste commonly used as a dip for mutton hot pot or ginger duck.
