A simple method to convert plain or all-purpose flour into self-raising flour. Self-raising flour is readily available in the UK and is a convenient flour for baking light and fluffy goods such as cakes, scones, and pancakes. For regions where self-raising flour is difficult to obtain, this is a practical solution.

Convert All-Purpose or Plain flour into Self-Raising flour

Measure out 900 g of plain or all-purpose flour.

Add 36 g of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt. Remember the ratio is 1 teaspoon of baking powder per 100 g of flour.

Roughly mix the ingredients together using a wooden spoon.

Pass the mixture through a fine sieve at least twice in two or three batches, ensuring the baking powder and salt are evenly distributed throughout the flour. Push any lumps through with your fingers.

For complete blending, sieve once more if needed. Your self-raising flour is now ready to use.
