   Pour the whole milk into a pot, and add a pinch of fleur de sel and sugar to prevent the milk from catching as it cooks.

   Flatten the vanilla pod with the blade of a knife, split it lengthwise, and scrape out the seeds. Add both the pod and the seeds to the milk.

   Bring the milk to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Simmer gently for about 22 minutes, stirring from time to time, until the rice is tender.

   Keep in mind that the rice will continue to absorb milk as it cools, so it may look thinner than the final desired consistency while still hot—it will thicken upon cooling.
