Steps
1
Sift the powdered sugar to remove lumps, ensuring a smooth and clump-free frosting.
2
Add room-temperature butter and salt to a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Start on low speed for a few seconds, then gradually increase to medium-high and beat for about 5 minutes until the butter becomes light, fluffy, and noticeably whiter in color.
3
Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add the sifted powdered sugar in half-cup portions. After each cup of sugar, add 2-3 tablespoons of heavy cream to achieve the desired consistency and texture.
4
Scrape down the sides of the bowl periodically to ensure even mixing. After adding all the sugar and remaining cream, the mixture should be smooth and fluffy.
5
Add vanilla extract or your chosen flavoring (such as almond extract, fruit jam, or fresh fruit reduction) and mix on low speed until fully incorporated.
6
Let the frosting rest for several minutes—it may appear foamy and bubbly on top. Mix on low speed for 30 seconds or stir gently with a spatula to remove large air bubbles before piping or applying.
7
Your buttercream is now ready to use. Smooth it over cakes and cupcakes or fill a piping bag (no more than halfway full) to pipe decorative swirls.
