Pack whole or sliced pickling cucumbers into a clean jar, then add a few garlic cloves and sliced onion.

Add dill—fresh or dried—for flavor.

Fill the jar halfway with vinegar and the rest with water (a 1:1 ratio), then pour the liquid into a pot to heat.

Stir in about 4 tbsp salt and 4 tbsp sugar to season, then bring the brine to a boil.
