Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Peel and core about 2.5 lb of apples, then slice thinly so they bake evenly.

Transfer the sliced apples to a large bowl and toss with the lemon juice.

Add the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg, then toss to combine.

Pour the apple mixture into an 8x8-inch baking dish (lightly greased if desired) and spread into an even layer.

Cube the butter for the filling and scatter it evenly over the apples.

In another bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

Add the cold cubed butter and work it into the dry ingredients with your hands (or a pastry blender) until pea-sized crumbs form.
