Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare a 9×13 inch pan with parchment paper or butter.

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Whisk together until well mixed.

In a separate bowl, combine hot water and room temperature molasses, stirring well. Whisk in granulated sugar until dissolved.

Pour melted butter into the wet mixture. Crack eggs into a separate bowl, check for shells, then mix with butter and vanilla extract. Combine with the wet mixture.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and whisk gently until almost combined, taking care not to overmix. Scrape the bottom as you whisk, ensuring no flour lumps remain.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake in a 350°F oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the center springs back when lightly touched.

Make the frosting (optional): In a mixer with paddle attachment, cream the butter (half brown, half regular) for about a minute on medium speed. Mix in powdered sugar on low speed, then add heavy cream to achieve a creamy consistency. Mix on medium speed and add lemon zest for flavor.

Once the cake has cooled, serve plain dusted with powdered sugar, or spread the frosting over the top using an ice cream scoop and smooth with a spatula for a rustic finish.
